The School Day

No limits... Just possibilities

St. Joseph’s Students arrive at school either driven in by their families, arriving by commissioned transport or if they live with us, walk with a member of their House Team. They are greeted and collected by a member of their class team and then transition to their classroom where the whole class with collect together for Circle Time.

Those who need it may transfer via a longer route that enables them to decompress and be ready to mix with their peers. At Circle Time they ask each other how they are and with support identify their mood.

The classes then launch into the main body of the timetable; typically starting with Literacy and Numeracy before engaging in wider curriculum activities such as creative arts, sports, Life and Living Skills etc.. Students with learning difficulties require a ‘small steps’ approach in order to facilitate learning.

Throughout the pathways, students may need to continue to access multi-sensory approaches. Multi-sensory approaches support our students to challenge and overcome their barriers to learning.

Lunch can be eaten in or collected from the dining room or Enterprise Café and students are able to choose from the variety of meat and vegetarian options available to them. For some students more bespoke food can be produced to meet more limited diets.

On different days pupils have the opportunity to develop work related learning skills, OCR qualifications, social skills, food production skills, customer skills, business skills, all while enjoying our onsite training café. Classes take turns to be producers and consumers under the expert guidance of our work related team.

In the afternoon students return to the timetable before ending the day with Candle Time when the class comes together again and under the supervision of the therapy team member reflects on the day before transitioning home.
