The Work Skills and Enterprise Centre

GREAT NEWS…..

We are building a fantastic NEW Work Skills & Enterprise Centre this year. Although we have raised most of the money for the construction – roughly £915,000!  – we now need support to buy all the fittings and fixtures. There is an extensive shopping list, so any help you are able to give is much appreciated. Please do get in touch to find out what we need and how much it costs via fundraiser@st-josephscranleigh.surrey.sch.uk

WHY ARE WE BUILDING?

When our young people leave the school, the majority will continue to need some form of daily support. Less than 6% of them will ever secure any form of paid employment. Academic qualifications for most are simply not an option, so the school concentrate instead on providing students with a wide range of personal independence skills. This provides the young people with more options as to where, how and with whom they live; something many 18 years olds take for granted.

With access to the right facilities, our young people can achieve a good quality of life, including supported employment or volunteer work. St Joseph’s nurture a variety of interests and hobbies to sustain young people and to encourage them to be as independent as possible.

WHAT ARE WE BUILDING?

Our Work Skills & Enterprise Centre will include a café with a semi commercial kitchen, a craft and pottery room and workshop. The café is designed to resemble a “work style” environment with commercial grade catering equipment to enable delivery of both catering and hospitality training, with allied qualifications. The centre will be accessible to the community (on a pre-arranged basis) and generate work experience and work placements for students. This provides the young people with confidence through real life experiences. New spaces for pottery, arts, crafts, electronics and woodwork will help develop a wider range of hobbies to take through into adult life.
