Key Stages 1 & 2

KEY STAGE 1 & 2

In KS 1 & 2 we focus on play skills and use the ‘portage principles’ to help students begin their education journey.

All students have play plans and the teams are skilled at engaging them through play to achieve learning outcomes.  We like to call this learning through stealth.

Outdoor learning and Forest Schools is an important part of our weekly timetable.  students explore functional numeracy and literacy in a natural outdoor setting, building understanding, stamina, strength, balance and social skills.

We work closely with the Therapy team ensuring students are supported in emotional regulation, speech and language therapy and OT.  The integrated nature of our therapies team ensures consistency of approach.

We have strong links with families and involve them in all aspects of their child’s learning.  Communication with families and family focus is one of the cornerstones of our practice.

In KS 1 & 2 we begin teaching independence and life skills through focused teaching of self-help skills by breaking tasks down and using chaining.  We have weekly language visits, functional literacy sessions, food tech lessons and a number of sports activities including trampoline, swimming and horse riding.

Curriculum for 2017-2018 Topics are:
